7 train stations in India that offer cross-border travel
EVEN as most of us take flights or cruise ships to travel abroad, trains too play a significant role in transporting passengers to bordering countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. India has seven train stations that facilitate international travel. Let's take a look at these stations from where these trains originate.
Petrapole Railway Station | Under British rule, the Bengal Central Railway Company constructed a broad-gauge railway line connecting Dum Dum with Khulna (now in Bangladesh), via Bangaon around 174 km, which opened in stages and was completed in 1884. The lines were merged with the Eastern Bengal Railway in 1904.
The Petrapole Railway Station is located in West Bengal, near the Indo-Bangladesh border and serves as a crucial transit point for exporting and importing goods between the two countries. The station is a significant hub for freight traffic, and passengers travelling to Bangladesh need a valid passports and visa for travel.
Haldibari Railway Station | Located just 4.5 km from the Bangladesh border, near India, the Haldibari Railway Station serves as another transit point. It is connected to Bangladesh via the Chilahati railway station, approximately 7 km from India's border. Jaynagar Railway Station | Jaynagar Railway Station, in Madhubani district in Bihar, is located close to the Indo-Nepal border. It is linked to Nepal via the Kurtha station of Janakpur.
Attari Junction | This popular train station is located near the India-Pakistan border in Amritsar, Punjab. It is the last station on the Indian side before the border at Wagah. The station handles both passenger and freight traffic and is a critical point for customs and immigration checks for passengers travelling between the two countries.
Delhi Junction | Commonly called the Old Delhi Railway Station, Delhi Junction is one of the oldest and busiest railway stations in India. The station has numerous platforms and extensive facilities for passengers. It serves as a major hub for trains to various parts of India and Pakistan.
Radhikapur Railway Station | This station located in the Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal, is an active rail transit system on the Bangladesh-India border and functions as a checkpoint between the two countries.
Raxaul Junction | Raxaul Junction is a crucial station, located near the Birgunj border in Bihar. Having five platforms, it is well-connected via the rail route to different parts of India, serving as a major entry point into Nepal.
