ISRO to expand space operations, plans four launch pads by 2029; no privatisation

THE Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to expand its space operations, with a target of having four launch pads by 2029, ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan has said.

The proposed expansion is expected to strengthen India’s launch infrastructure and support the growing demands of the country’s space programme.

Narayanan also clarified that ISRO would not be privatised, reaffirming the organisation’s continued role as a public-sector space agency. Private companies are expected to contribute to the space sector, but this does not mean that ISRO itself will be handed over to private ownership.

The plans reflect India’s broader efforts to expand its space capabilities, increase launch capacity and encourage greater participation by private industry in the space sector.

The new spaceport at Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu will include launch pads, integration facilities and tracking and command systems. The proposed 2,000-acre complex is intended to support Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) missions and meet rising demand for satellite launches.

Narayanan also outlined plans for the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme, including three uncrewed test flights before the crewed mission. He further referred to Chandrayaan-5, a proposed joint lunar mission with Japan featuring a 350-kg rover.

The expansion is aimed at strengthening India’s space capabilities while enabling private industry to support commercial operations and technological development.
