World today and the frustration of new generation
FOR those born 75 years ago and 50 years ago, the world has changed a lot. For those born 25 years ago or after 2000, the world has changed differently. The biggest change we notice from the 20th century to the 21st century is how technology is used in everyone's daily life.
Governments around the world and alliances among countries have not changed much. Several conflicts in the world exist; the Russia-Ukraine war continues and the US-Iran war is still not concluded. The United Nations still exists, but with very little influence on global conflicts. Democracies still flourish in most major countries except Russia, China, North Korea, Gulf countries and some African countries.
So what is the status of the world today? Is it more dynamic? Is it moving towards a better global human society? Is cooperation between countries better?
We cannot answer these questions positively because leaders are not trying to make it a better world. One leader alone cannot do it; it has to be a united effort. Maybe a new world order needs to be created for the human race to enjoy a friendlier and more cooperative world of countries.
The United Nations is no longer a very effective organisation. It has been institutionalised in such a way that it is run like a business of many units of special assignments being managed by a single person. The veto power of a few countries does not allow a fairer deal. Expanding the UN Security Council with more members will not have any impact on the veto power of a few countries.
The world is going to change drastically again with the implementation of Artificial Intelligence, which will have major impacts on our everyday life. Nobody knows what the real impact is; we need to wait and see. It is a fear that it will have a very negative impact if it is not controlled properly.
When human intellect is combined with Artificial Intelligence created by humans, which may exceed human intelligence, the consequences can be positive and negative. If the impact is too negative, then it impacts daily human life and may even start destroying normal human life. AI will have a positive impact once we put controls on the response to tasks AI is asked to perform. Humanity will be able to utilise AI technology for more advancement in science, technology, medicine and other aspects of life.
Another major change that is happening in the world now is the involvement of the new generation or Gen Z, in the democratic system of governments all over the world. The new generation wants to change the old method of operation of the democratic leaders.
Currently, the world’s oldest democracy - the USA; the largest democracy – India; and the European cradle of democracy - France, Italy and Albania - are undergoing that call for change.
In India, the Cockroach Janta Party, formed by Gen Z, is currently agitating against the ruling party, saying that the Chief Election Commission deleted more than 13 crore voters from the voter list and that in the 2024 general elections the BJP majority happened because they deleted the votes of those who voted against the BJP.
Gen Z wants change. In the United States, the high cost of living and the increase in the prices of gasoline, diesel and groceries have made it difficult for Gen Z to afford to live comfortably. Most people get settled after marriage and, after having children, buy a home and start a family life by age 40.
Now they cannot afford to do that, and because of that, they are turning against the ruling party in the majority. In France, the New Gen is striking against the increased cost of education when the government cut the budget by about $90 billion to balance the budget. In Italy and Albania also, the New Gen is frustrated.
The world is definitely going to change because of AI and the agitations of the New Gen and we should be prepared for that. It may not be sweet in the beginning, but the change is inevitable. Be prepared.
