Heavy rains lash parts of Kerala
HEAVY rains are lashing several parts of Keralam, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting isolated heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning in different parts of the state.
A yellow alert was issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Wayanad and Kannur on Sunday.
Isolated areas could receive 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain in 24 hours, according to the weather forecast.
The continuing rain has also raised concerns in Keralam's hilly regions. A minor landslide has been reported in Vattavada in Idukki district, where heavy rainfall can make slopes vulnerable to slips and soil movement. Media reports indicate that two people were killed
No major damage has been reported in connection with the minor incident, but authorities and residents in the high-range areas are maintaining caution as more rain is expected.
Idukki has been repeatedly identified as one of the areas requiring particular attention during spells of heavy rainfall because of its mountainous terrain and landslide vulnerability.
Rain to continue
The IMD expects rain or thundershowers to continue in Keralam over the coming days, with isolated heavy rainfall possible in different districts.
The weather system includes a trough extending across Keralam and neighbouring regions, supporting increased rainfall activity.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also possible in isolated areas. People are advised to remain cautious during lightning and avoid exposed locations.
Meanwhile, the National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned of high waves and possible coastal inundation along several stretches of the Keralam coast, with waves potentially reaching around 0.8 to 1.5 metres in the affected areas.
Authorities have urged residents, particularly those living in hilly, landslide-prone and low-lying areas, to follow official weather and disaster-management advisories.
With the southwest monsoon remaining active in parts of the state, Keralam is expected to see intermittent rain over the next several days, with localised heavy showers possible.
