New government in Kerala – democracy at work
IN Kerala, it used to be UDF for one five-year term and then LDF for one five-year term. Last time LDF won for a second term, and now UDF has won with a big majority. Democracy is at work. Change is good in a democracy. But if one party rules for a long time, there is room for corruption and misuse of power, which happened with the LDF government. The same is happening in the central government now.
In America, usually a Democratic president wins for two four-year terms and then a Republican president wins for two terms. Donald Trump is an exception. After one term, he lost to Joe Biden, the Democrat, and then he ran again against Kamala Harris, Biden’s vice president, and won again, which is unprecedented. Again, democracy, the government of the people, by the people, and for the people, is at play.
UDF, along with getting a big majority, becomes responsible for a big mandate. Chief Minister V.D. Sathesan and his ministry have taken over the Kerala government, promising to serve the people of Kerala with emphasis on people’s needs.
Aside from taking care of the daily needs of the people, eliminating poverty, taking care of the elderly, having a good educational system, maintaining good roads, providing good government services, uninterrupted electrical supply, good transportation and effective law enforcement, it is important that the government is not corrupt and all people are served equally to meet their needs.
Lots of promises were made, and it is good that the new government will try to meet those promises. In a democratic system of government of the people, there cannot be any discrimination between the rich and the poor, influential people and ordinary people; all are equal. Everybody has the same right except the criminals and the corrupt in society.
Kerala has to change its direction in terms of social and educational reforms. The new government has already announced the formation of a department for old-age people, which is an area that needs a lot of government support and action.
Education is another area that has to undergo reform in this modern age of AI and other advancements in various areas. Tourism is an ongoing area that needs development along with good roads, transportation, and an uninterrupted power supply. Creating employment opportunities for young people is an area that needs more attention.
On behalf of World Malayalee Voice, I congratulate the government by the people headed by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan. We wish them all the success. Long live democracy!
