St. Mark’s Cathedral, Bengaluru, issues dress code for members and visitors

ST Mark’s Cathedral in Bengaluru has issued a dress guide for all members and visitors, emphasising the need to dress modestly and respectfully while entering the place of worship.

The guidelines state that appropriate clothing is a visible sign of respect and helps preserve the dignity, sanctity and prayerful atmosphere of the cathedral. Visitors are also encouraged to lead by example through their words, actions and appearance.

What is considered appropriate?

The cathedral recommends clothing that covers the shoulders and is modest and respectful. Suitable Indian attire includes salwar kameez, sarees, kurtas with dupattas and similar outfits. Western wear should preferably include dresses and skirts that fall below the knee.

The guidelines also advise visitors to avoid tight or revealing clothing and to ensure that their footwear is clean and respectful. Caps and hats should be removed inside the cathedral.

What should be avoided?

The dress guide asks visitors to avoid deeply cut sleeveless tops or blouses, backless tops, low-cut outfits, shorts, mini-skirts and short dresses. Tight or excessively revealing clothing is also discouraged.

Clothing carrying offensive images or words is not considered appropriate. Very casual footwear such as slippers and beachwear should also be avoided.

Visitors are further advised not to wear caps or hats inside the cathedral, use sunglasses or tinted eyewear during worship, or use mobile phones and earphones inside the church.
