Rain threat looms over Kerala’s Onam celebrations
KERALA'S festive Onam season has begun under an unwelcome cloud, with the southwest monsoon expected to remain active across the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Kerala, raising concerns that rain could disrupt outdoor celebrations, cultural programmes, processions and other public events during the peak Onam period.
According to the latest IMD forecast issued on August 24, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Kerala on August 24, while heavy rain is expected to continue on August 25 and 26. Strong surface winds of around 40–50 kmph may also prevail over Kerala and Lakshadweep during this period.
The current warning is particularly significant because it coincides with the most important days of Kerala's Onam celebrations. Reports based on the latest district-wise forecast indicate that several districts have been placed under heightened rainfall alerts, with very heavy rain possible in Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur and Wayanad.
Outdoor celebrations face uncertainty
The rain threat could affect a wide range of Onam programmes. Public gatherings, cultural performances, competitions, processions and tourism-related events that are planned in open spaces may have to be modified or postponed if heavy showers occur.
This is particularly relevant in Thiruvananthapuram, where the state-level Onam Tourism Week is scheduled from August 24 to 30, featuring cultural programmes, traditional art forms, food festivals and exhibitions. Similar celebrations are being organised at numerous venues across the state.
However, rain need not bring Onam celebrations to a complete halt. Organisers can make contingency arrangements, including covered venues, temporary shelters, proper drainage and flexible schedules, while giving priority to public safety.
Coastal areas also on alert
The weather concerns extend beyond rainfall. Coastal districts have also been advised to remain cautious because of rough sea conditions and elevated waves. Authorities have warned coastal residents and fishermen to exercise caution, particularly during periods of strong winds and adverse sea conditions.
Landslides and flooding remain a concern
For Kerala, heavy rain during the monsoon season carries risks beyond inconvenience. In hilly districts, saturated soil can increase the possibility of landslides and flash floods, while intense rainfall can cause waterlogging and flooding in low-lying areas. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has urged people to remain vigilant in areas vulnerable to landslides and flash floods.
Will rain spoil Onam?
Not necessarily. Kerala has celebrated countless Onams under cloudy skies and showers. But this year's forecast calls for additional caution because the rain is expected to remain active during several key days of the festival.
For families, event organisers and tourists, the message is simple: "celebrate Onam with enthusiasm, but keep an eye on weather warnings and be prepared for sudden changes."
Onam is a celebration of togetherness, tradition and joy. A little rain may change the way Kerala celebrates, but it need not dampen the spirit of the festival—provided safety remains the first priority.
