Finance Department allocates Rs 1.10 crore for a new car for Chief Minister
THE Kerala Finance Department has recently sanctioned ₹1.10 crore to purchase two new cars for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's official convoy. This decision was made by Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal on December 1, 2025, by exempting the purchase from existing treasury restrictions.
The new vehicles, which are expected to be black, will replace two existing Kia Carnival cars in the convoy.
Context of the Purchase
Financial Scrutiny: The purchase has attracted criticism as the state is facing a significant financial crunch and has implemented austerity measures, including a ban on purchasing new government vehicles (with exceptions for enforcement departments).
Previous Purchases: This is not the first time the CM's convoy has been upgraded during the current government's tenure.
In 2021, four vehicles (three Innova Crysta and one Tata Harrier) were ordered for the convoy.
In 2022, the government sanctioned ₹88.7 lakh for a new Kia Carnival and three Innova Crysta cars, citing enhanced security needs. The Kia Carnival replaced the previously approved Tata Harrier.
Reason: The latest decision was reportedly made based on a recommendation from the state police chief. The government has previously justified such purchases for the CM and other officials (like the Governor, who received a Mercedes-Benz) by citing security and safety requirements
