ChatGPT down globally: Thousands of users report errors messages and stalled prompts in US, India and other regions

OpenAI's ChatGPT is experiencing a global outage today, leaving thousands of users stranded with error messages and stalled prompts. Reports of service disruptions surged across the United States, India, and multiple other regions.

By 3:14 PM (IST), independent outage tracker Downdetector logged over 1,500 complaints in India, while reports in the United States surpassed 3,000 around the time this article was published. Disruption to the generative AI platform extended across several other regions as well including Europe.

Starting early in the morning, the outage rapidly worsened, leaving software developers, professionals, and students stranded mid-task. A lot of users have shared details about the outage on social media platforms such as X.

OpenAI says it is monitoring the recovery

Meanwhile, OpenAI has also acknowledged the global downtime on the company's status page.

“We’re currently experiencing issues,” the company said, adding that its team has applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery.

Which services are affected?

The disruption has impacted OpenAI’s core ecosystem, affecting nearly every consumer and developer facility. These include:

ChatGPT web and mobile facilities: Users across Free, Plus, and Enterprise tiers are encountering issues with the service, ranging from the prompt not getting recorded by the system to network error messages.

Voice mode and image generation: Interactive audio features, including real-time voice mode and image generation features, are repeatedly failing to initiate or timing out mid-session.

Codex and API integration: Developers and enterprises relying on OpenAI's API for automated workflows, backend applications, and code processing are also hit with request rejections.

While OpenAI has not disclosed specific technical details, it has confirmed that restoration efforts are underway. It has also not yet given a timeline by which the outage is expected to be fixed and users will be able to resume their tasks.

What should users do since ChatGPT is not working?

If you are currently getting error messages or frozen prompts because of the global ChatGPT outage, there are a few simple troubleshooting steps you can try to get things working again:

Keep visiting status.openai.com to check the progress of the recovery attempt by the company's technology team. It will also give you information about facilities that are impacted.

Refresh the page or start a new chat. Don't forget to clear your browser cache and cookies. You can also try using the incognito or private browsing window to see if it works.

Switch to a different network if possible. Use mobile data instead of Wi-Fi to rule out localised routing conflicts.

Consider temporarily switching to alternative generative AI tools such as Claude or Gemini until services stabilise.

While OpenAI's ChatGPT is facing downtime, its rival Anthropic has launched its newest flagship model, Claude Opus 5, boasting breakthrough performance in coding and knowledge work at half the price of its predecessor. This is the company's fourth model launch in less than two months.
