Global Malayalee & media - World Malayalee Voice

I MIGRATED to the USA in 1973 as a Kottayamkaran Keralite Malayalee. What is my identity now? Well, I am still a Keralite, a Malayalee and a Kottayamkaran. 

While living abroad, the local people identify you as an Indian; the Indians will try to identify themselves as a South Indian or a person from Kerala or a Malayalee. If an Indian ask you where you are from, you say "from Kerala"; when a person from Kerala asks you where you are from, you say "Kottayam"; when a person from Kottayam asks you where you are from, you say "from Kollad bordering Kottayam"; and when somebody from Kollad asks you, you give your house name and location. The identity "Malayalee" is never used here. So, where does the Malayalee identity come from?

Malayalees have migrated all over the world in the last 100 years and have become a global society or we call "Global Malayalee." Here, we use the word "Malayalee" as our identity. The new generation calls us Mallus. Anyway, Malayalee Indian is our global identity. My children born in America have no problem with their Malayalee Indian identity. Even my granddaughter, who is 9 years old, is proud of her Malayalee identity.

Malayalees live in 191 countries out of 198 in the world and have become a global Malayalee community rather than just a Kerala community. So it is important that we maintain the Malayalee identity for generations to come. Tell your children and grandchildren, brothers and sisters and their children to maintain the Malayalee Indian identity and be proud of their identity. 

Here in the USA, everybody keeps their identity for generations, even though the children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren are born in the USA, Irish Americans, German Americans, Italian Americans, Chinese Americans, Indian Americans, Nigerian Americans, etc. America is called the melting pot of all cultures, people from all 198 countries are here and they all maintain their identity, culture and traditions.

We should be proud of our ethnic heritage. Every ethnic culture is unique. Malayalee food is unique. How wide a variety of breakfasts we have! Malayalee beef curry and fish are so famous. Malayalee friendship and communal harmony are well known in India.
