Veteran theatre and film actor Savithri Sreedharan passes away
Veteran actor Savithri Sreedharan, best known for her role in the Malayalam film Sudani From Nigeria (2018), died on Wednesday, September 23. She was 83 years old and was suffering from age-related ailments. A part of several Kozhikode-based theatre groups for over four decades, Savithri rose to fame after she played the role of the mother in Sudani From Nigeria. The character earned her a special mention at the 66th National Film Awards, 2018. In a strong political statement, Savithri decided to boycott the award ceremony held in 2019, along with the other crew members of Sudani, as a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, citing that the Act divides people based on religion.A veteran presence in the Malayalam theatre world, Savithri was associated with famous theatre groups in Kozhikode, including Kalimga, Sangamam, Stage India, and Chiranthana Theatres. She has performed several powerful women characters across a thousand plays in her illustrious stage career.Her talent earned her the Kerala government’s award for Best Theatre Artist in 1977 and 1993 and the Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Academi Award for Drama in 2009.Savithri made her silver screen debut in the 1991 Malayalam film Kadavu, scripted, directed, and produced by MT Vasudevan Nair. She also appeared in Salim Bavba’s 2010 Malayalam film Valiyangadi and a couple of short films before her role in Sudani From Nigeria.Apart from a special mention at the 2018 National Awards, Sudani also earned her the Kerala State Award for Best Character Actress, the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress–Malayalam, and the Asianet Award for Best Supporting Actress. Following the widespread appreciation, Savithri went on to act in several other Malayalam films, including Virus, Pada, Ittymani From China, Paappan, and Christy, among others.Savithri passed away at her residence in Kozhikode’s Mankavu.
