IS Japan battling a new pandemic?

After the deadly Covid-19 virus wreaked havoc globally for more than 5 years, Japan's health authorities have now declared a health emergency after they witnessed a massive surge in flu cases. According to the reports, over 4000 patients with symptoms like fever, cold and cough are admitted to the hospital.

Taking cognisance of the deteriorating situation, the government has officially declared a nationwide flu epidemic.

Officials confirmed that Okinawa is seeing the most patients per hospital, followed by Tokyo and Kagoshima. More than 100 schools, kindergartens, and childcare centres have been closed due to outbreaks among children.

A surge in virus-triggered illnesses is common during the winter. However, this year the cases associated with the dangerous flu virus strain is wreaking havoc much before the winter's onset. According to health specialists, the early and intense outbreak could signal a shift in the flu virus's behaviour.

Professor Yoko Tsukamoto of the Health Sciences University of Hokkaido spoke to the Japanese media, saying, "The flu season has started really early this year, but in the changing global environment, this might become a more common scenario."

With flu cases expected to peak sooner than usual, authorities are urging people, especially the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing conditions, to get vaccinated immediately.
