10,000 drunk drivers in net in two-day crackdown
KERALA has intensified its crackdown on drunk driving after police caught more than 10,000 motorists during a two-day statewide enforcement drive, prompting Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala to warn of stringent action, including cancellation of driving licences.
The minister said on Monday that those found driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating substances would face strict legal action. The government would also explore measures to prevent offenders from obtaining driving licences again.
The large number of violations detected during checks conducted across the state, both during the day and at night, has highlighted the scale of the road safety challenge facing Kerala.
Chennithala said alcohol and intoxicating substances had been factors in recent road accidents, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement against impaired driving.
With the festive season approaching, the police have been directed to intensify inspections and take firm action against motorists driving under the influence.
The minister appealed to the public to cooperate with the enforcement campaign, stressing that the measures were necessary to curb a dangerous practice and improve road safety.
Action will be initiated under the Motor Vehicles Act against those found violating the law, he said.
The crackdown comes amid growing concern over road accidents and reckless driving in the state. Driving under the influence poses a serious threat not only to motorists themselves but also to passengers, pedestrians and other road users.
