Kerala Piravi - the birth of Kerala

KERALA Piravi, celebrated every year on November 1st, marks the birth of the state of Kerala.

On November 1, 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act, the Malayalam-speaking regions were united to form one state.

Before that, this area was divided into three distinct parts - the princely states of Travancore and Cochin, and the Malabar region which was part of the Madras Presidency. The unification also brought in Kasaragod from South Canara.

The formation was the result of a long struggle called the Aikya Kerala Movement - a movement for a united Kerala for all Malayalam-speaking people.

Why it matters:

It is not just an administrative anniversary. It is a celebration of our language, culture, and identity as Malayalis.

How it is celebrated:

Today, across Kerala, schools, government offices, and cultural organisations celebrate with:

• Flag hoisting and singing of the state song • Cultural programs - Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Oppana, and classical music • Seminars on Malayalam language and history • Awards for contributions to Malayalam literature and culture

In essence, Kerala Piravi is a day to remember our roots and take pride in being part of God's Own Country.
