Vatican: Jesus Christ is the sole Redeemer and Mediator of salvation

THE Vatican has issued a new doctrinal note, "Mater Populi Fidelis" ("Mother of the Faithful People of God"), which addresses various Marian titles and explicitly states that the title "Co-redemptrix" is inappropriate for the Virgin Mary.

Key points from the new document include:

Jesus Christ is the sole Redeemer and Mediator of salvation. The document emphasizes that "there is salvation in no one else" (Acts 4:12), and Mary's role, while unique and vital, is subordinate to and entirely dependent on Christ's.

The title "Co-redemptrix" is rejected because it "risks obscuring Christ's unique salvific mediation and can therefore create confusion and an imbalance in the harmony of the truths of the Christian faith".

Mary is the "Mother of Believers": The note affirms Mary's role as a mother to all Christians through her maternal care and intercession, a title rooted in Scripture and the Church Fathers.

"Mediatrix" can be used in a subordinate sense: The term "Mediatrix" is acceptable when understood as Mary's cooperation, assistance, or intercession, but not if it implies she is a universal dispenser of grace on the same level as Christ. Only God can bestow grace, which He does through Christ's humanity.

Clarification of Marian devotion: The move is intended to ensure that Marian devotion remains centered on Christ and to prevent potential misunderstandings or exaggerated, "self-centered" cults that have spread, particularly on social media.

The document, approved by Pope Leo XIV (as per the date of the search results), aims to settle a long-running theological debate within the Church.
