World Cup commentator has FIFA credentials revoked after outburst over controversial red card

A PARAGUAYAN commentator at the World Cup has lost his credentials after a stunning outburst following Miguel Almiron's red card, as he turned on the referee and FIFA during the broadcast.

Paraguay beat Turkey 1-0 in its second World Cup group match, but Almiron became the first player in history to be sent off for covering his mouth during a confrontation. The rule was brought in to prevent players from hiding racist, discriminatory, or abusive language.

Almiron broke his silence after the victory, thanking his teammates and the Paraguayan federation, but elsewhere, commentator Jorge Vera also faced disciplinary action from FIFA. His furious reaction while commentating led to his credentials being revoked for the remainder of the World Cup.

After Almiron was dismissed from the field in a crucial game, Vera slammed Salvadoran referee Ivan Barton by calling him a thief. He also turned on FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

"Thief, thief, Barton. They killed football. FIFA, you killed football," Vera said on the broadcast. "Infantino, you're responsible for this."The commentator continued, adding, "FIFA, take responsibility for turning football into this. A disgrace. You should be ashamed, Infantino." He wasn't done there, as Vera then called out CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez.

"Alejandro Domínguez, fewer photos with Infantino. Grow a pair. You f------ thieves!" Vera then questioned FIFA's new rule, defending Almiron in the process. "What kind of racism could Miguel Almiron possibly use against the Turkish player? Show me some common sense," he said. It comes as an ex-mayor of Mexico City was forced to issue a statement about her CHEST after turning heads at the World Cup.

The stunning live commentary has cost Vera his credential for the remainder of the tournament, a brutal blow for him, especially as Paraguay managed to clinch a 1-0 win and remain in contention for the knockout rounds.

However, the broadcaster ABC Cardinal in Paraguay, which Vera represents, has issued a detailed statement requesting that FIFA reconsider. ABC Cardinal believes that, because it was an isolated incident followed by an immediate apology and acceptance of wrongdoing, FIFA should be more lenient.

Among the eight-point statement, it wrote, "We believe that the permanent cancellation of a credential for the entire duration of the tournament constitutes an extreme and manifestly disproportionate sanction for a primary infraction that was immediately acknowledged, for which formal apologies and concrete mechanisms for redress were offered.

"The apologies were presented, the error was admitted, and corrective measures were immediately implemented... Correcting errors is necessary. So is ensuring that sanctions are reasonable, proportionate, and compatible with basic principles of justice."

The statement continued, "No sanction should disregard a professional career based on an isolated incident that has been acknowledged and rectified. We trust that FIFA will review its decision and allow proportionality and dialogue to lead us to justice."

After his credentials were revoked, Vera posted a video on social media, apologised for getting carried away, and expressed regret over the personal attacks on the referee and FIFA. Vera said, via a translation: "To the public opinion. During the live transmission of the Paraguay-Turkey match, in the heat of the moment and the tension of the broadcast, I made comments that exceeded the limits.

"I used strong expressions and personal attacks against the referee and FIFA officials, which I deeply regret. I recognize that I went too far with my words. I have already sent a formal note of rectification and apologies directly to the FIFA accreditation team, acknowledging the verbal excess caused by the pressure of the live broadcast.

"I want to apologize publicly to FIFA, to the refereeing team, to my colleagues, and especially to the audience for any offense my words may have caused. It was never my intention to attack anyone personally. I got carried away in the emotion of the moment. I take full responsibility for my mistake. Thank you."

It comes after a sickening discovery was made outside the Iran team's training base in Mexico.
