Muharram holiday in Kerala on Friday
THE Kerala government has announced that the public holiday for Muharram will be observed on Friday, June 26, 2026, following confirmations related to the Islamic lunar calendar and the observance of the Islamic New Year.
The revised holiday falls a day later than the date indicated in the state's original holiday calendar.
The change will apply to government offices, educational institutions and other establishments covered by the state's holiday notification. Banks and several public sector institutions are also expected to remain closed in accordance with the revised holiday schedule.
Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic year and holds special significance for Muslims around the world. The date of observance is subject to the sighting of the crescent moon, which can result in changes to previously announced holiday calendars.
With the holiday falling on a Friday, many employees and students will enjoy an extended weekend along with the regular Saturday and Sunday break.
