Woman who killed son, 4, detained in a psychiatric facility

A WOMAN who killed her four-year-old son, identified as Akanksha Adivarekar, has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order for mental health treatment in the UK, after pleading guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility.

This means she was not "set free" but detained in a psychiatric facility.

The Case of Akanksha Adivarekar

Incident: In June 2025, Adivarekar stabbed her four-year-old son, Agustya Hegishte, to death at their home in Maidenhead, UK, before attempting suicide.

Legal Finding: Three doctors agreed that she was suffering from bipolar disorder at the time of the killing. This led to her charge being reduced from murder to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, which she admitted to in court.

Sentence: She received a hospital order with restrictions under the UK Mental Health Act. She will be detained indefinitely in a secure hospital and will only be discharged with the approval of the Ministry of Justice or a mental health tribunal, ensuring she is not simply released into the community.
