Kerala braces for intense monsoon spell as heavy rain continues
KERALA is witnessing an active phase of the southwest monsoon, with widespread rainfall disrupting normal life across several districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the wet spell is likely to intensify over the next few days, issuing orange alerts for several districts until August 2 as a strong monsoon system remains active over the region.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall has already been reported in parts of northern and central Kerala, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic disruptions, and a heightened risk of landslides in hilly regions. District administrations have stepped up monitoring in vulnerable areas and urged residents living near hillsides and riverbanks to remain vigilant.
The IMD has cautioned that isolated places may receive very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea as rough conditions are expected to persist along the Kerala coast.
Disaster management authorities are keeping a close watch on rivers, dams, and landslide-prone zones. Emergency response teams have been placed on standby, while local bodies have been instructed to clear drainage channels and prepare relief measures if required.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, especially through ghat roads and hill districts, and to follow official weather advisories. School closure decisions, if necessary, will be taken by district administrations based on local weather conditions.
