Bail denied to Kochi Mini Cooper accident accused, tests show high blood alcohol levels
The Angamali Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, on October 17, denied bail to the four accused in the Nedumbassery car accident that claimed three lives. First accused Suhail Sajeev (19) who drove the vehicle, and his three friends Ninav (19), Joel (20), and Ameer (20) will continue in judicial custody. Suhail had hit a two wheeler from the back while driving in the early hours of October 11 in Nedumbassery near Kochi. The crash resulted in the deaths of Gopika (22), Iyas (21) and Devika (21) who were part-time workers in an antique shop in Thrikkakara. The accident, a result of Suhail allegedly being drunk and driving rashly, has triggered huge public protests in Angamali. Suhail’s lawyer told the media that an appeal will be filed at a sessions court. While Suhail has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, his friends Ninav, Ameer and Joel are facing charges of abetment. The prosecution reportedly submitted evidence, including lab reports of blood and urine tests, showing alcohol use along with CCTV visuals of the accident. Suhail’s blood alcohol level was high at the time of the accident, police have reportedly found. Reports say that the test found 160 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in Suhail. This is five times the permissible limit of 30 mg per 100 ml. A urine test also reportedly confirmed that Suhail was highly intoxicated at the time of the accident. Ninavu’s blood test also showed that he’d consumed alcohol. Meanwhile, the Motor Vehicle Department has initiated steps to suspend Suhail’s license. The Angamali Regional Transport office has sent a show cause notice to Suhail’s address. The Excise Department has served show cause notices to the establishments that served liquor to 19-year-olds. The Kerala High Court has asked the Excise Department to seek an explanation from them within seven days.
