8 from Tamil Nadu, including 7 engineering students, killed in Kerala accident
Eight people, including seven engineering students from Tamil Nadu, were killed after the car they were travelling in rammed into a stationary lorry on National Highway-66 in Kerala’s Thrissur district late on Friday, September 4.The crash took place at around midnight near Panambikunnu Centre in Kaipamangalam. The passengers of the car were students of an engineering college in Dindigul, police said.The deceased have been identified as Vishwa, Santhosh, Prasanna, Muraleekrishnan, Surya, Yuva Sanjith and Joshua, according to preliminary information. The identity of one victim is yet to be known.The car, bearing a Tamil Nadu registration number, was heading towards Kodungallur from the Guruvayur side when it hit the rear of a Maharashtra-registered lorry parked by the roadside. Three lorries were reportedly stationed along the road at the time of the accident. The accident occurred around 11.40 pm. Preliminary reports suggest that the car was travelling at high speed. CCTV footage from the area shows the vehicle moving along the highway before the collision. The lorry that the car struck is outside the camera’s frame, while a cloud of dust is visible immediately after the crash.The collision left the car completely mangled. People who were sleeping inside one of the parked lorries alerted local residents after hearing the impact.Police and fire and rescue personnel reached the spot soon after. The rescuers had to cut open the severely damaged vehicle to retrieve the occupants.Senior police officers also reached the accident site as rescue efforts continued. The bodies were initially shifted to private hospitals in Kodungallur and later taken to the mortuary at Thrissur Medical College, police said.The crash occurred on a section of NH-66 where construction work is underway. Residents said accidents have frequently occurred in the area. The circumstances leading to the collision are being examined by the police.
