Kerala mulls new district with Muvattupuzha as headquarters
KERALA is considering the creation of new districts as part of a proposed administrative reorganisation, with Muvattupuzha emerging as a likely headquarters for a new district.
The proposal is among several options being examined by the state government to improve administrative efficiency and decentralise governance.
The government has indicated that a commission will study the feasibility of creating new districts and taluks, taking population, geographical considerations and administrative requirements into account.
Under the proposal, the new Muvattupuzha district could be carved out of parts of the existing Ernakulam district, with Muvattupuzha serving as its administrative headquarters. Earlier proposals for a Muvattupuzha district have included areas around Muvattupuzha, Kothamangalam and Piravom, besides parts of neighbouring regions.
Muvattupuzha has long been at the centre of demands for a separate district. The proposal has also received political support, while the government is expected to take a final decision only after a detailed study.
If implemented, the move would mark a significant change in Keralam's administrative map. Kasaragod was the last district to be created in the state in 1984.
The proposed reorganisation is expected to generate considerable public and political interest, particularly in central Keralam, as the government weighs the administrative benefits against the financial implications of creating new districts and supporting infrastructure.
