Dubai set to launch autonomous vehicle trials ahead of 2026 rollout

DUBAI'S Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pony.ai, a global leader in autonomous driving technology, to initiate pilot trials of self-driving vehicles in the emirate.

The trials are set to begin later this year, laying the groundwork for a fully driverless commercial service targeted for launch in 2026.

The collaboration marks a major step in Dubai’s Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to convert 25% of all trips in the city to autonomous journeys by 2030.

Autonomous vehicles

Pony.ai recently unveiled its seventh-generation autonomous vehicle, co-developed with major automakers including Toyota, GAC, and BAIC. These vehicles feature state-of-the-art AI systems and an integrated suite of sensors — lidars, radars, and high-resolution cameras — to navigate complex road conditions safely and accurately.

The company has also partnered with leading technology platforms such as Tencent and Alibaba to embed its robotaxi services into everyday apps like WeChat and Alipay, further streamlining mobility experiences for users.

Milestone in smart mobility

The MoU was formally signed in the presence of Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, and Dr. Leo Wang, Chief Financial Officer of Pony.ai.

Signing on behalf of RTA was Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency, while Ann Shi, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development, represented Pony.ai. Senior officials from both sides also attended the ceremony.

Futuristic transport

Al Tayer praised the partnership, calling it a strategic move that reinforces Dubai’s position as a global leader in futuristic transport.

“Our collaboration with Pony.ai reflects RTA’s continued commitment to integrating cutting-edge autonomous mobility solutions,” he said.

“This aligns with Dubai’s vision to enhance sustainability, safety, and user convenience through innovation in transportation.”

Autonomous taxis

He added that autonomous taxis will play a key role in first- and last-mile connectivity, improving mobility for residents and visitors, enhancing road safety, and offering seamless public transport integration.

Pony.ai CFO Dr. Leo Wang underscored the significance of the Dubai partnership for the company's international expansion: “Collaborating with RTA exemplifies our mission to bring Level 4 autonomous technology to strategic global markets. Together, we’re laying the foundation for an intelligent transportation ecosystem across the MENA region.”
