Australia, New Zealand ban moringa
AS of June 2026, Australia and New Zealand have banned the sale and import of moringa (commonly known as drumstick, sahjan, or muringakka) as a food product or supplement.
It is classified as a "novel food" due to a lack of sufficient safety data, and the ban includes pods, leaves, and all moringa-based products.
Recent research indicated potential risks related to liver and kidney function, leading to a restriction on its use as a food ingredient.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand has rejected applications to approve moringa, making its retail sale non-compliant.
Imported products containing moringa are subject to prohibited food controls at the border. This ban affects all forms of moringa products, including frozen pods (muringakka) which are popular in certain cuisines.
