A.M.M.A gets first woman president as actor Shwetha Menon wins election

Actor Shwetha Menon has been elected as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (A.M.M.A.), making history as the first woman to hold the position. Shwetha won the seat with 159 votes, defeating actor Devan, who received 132 votes. Actor and dubbing artist Kukku Parameswaran has been elected as the General Secretary of the association. This marks the first time A.M.M.A. has elected women to the top posts.“We women won in an election. I am so happy,” Shwetha told the media, adding that all members will move forward as an association together. She also said that she will initiate a call to bring back the women actors who left A.M.M.A earlier. “They are most welcome. We are all one family. I am ready to meet them personally if that is fine with them,” she said. The election was necessitated when the previous administrative committee, headed by actor Mohanlal stepped down nearly a year ago, amid discussions following the release of the redacted version of the Hema Committee report on August 19, in 2024. The Hema Committee was formed in 2019 to study the working conditions of the women in the Malayalam film industry. The report revealed the horrific experiences of women faced from their male colleagues including sexual abuse and other violence. Following the release of the report, sexual harassment and assault allegations were raised against several actors, including members of the Association’s executive committee. In a press statement, the administrative committee of A.M.M.A. announced their decision to resign, citing moral responsibility.  In the election conducted on August 15, Kukku Parameswaran received 172 votes and Raveendran, who contested against her, received 115 votes. The Association elected Jayan R and Lakshmi Priya as vice presidents. Hansiba Hassan has been elected as joint secretary and Unni Sivapal as treasurer. The executive committee members: Executive committee members (reserved for women): Sarayu Mohan, Anjali Nair, Asha Aravind and Neena Kurup.Executive committee members (general): Santhosh Keezhattur, Vinu Mohan, Kailash, Tini Tom, Joy Mathew, Rony David Raj, and Sijoy Varghees.
