Actor Devan quits BJP, resigns as state vice-president
MALAYALAM actor and BJP Kerala state vice-president S. Devan has announced his resignation from the party, giving up both his organisational post and primary membership. He made the announcement on Sunday at a programme held at the Kanichukulangara Devi Temple in Alappuzha.
Devan said his political vision was based on the ideals and philosophy of Sree Narayana Guru, but he felt he had been unable to pursue that vision during his five years in the Kerala BJP. He said he had realised that his political path was different and had taken the decision several months ago.
“There were some issues during the last Assembly elections,” Devan said, adding that he did not wish to elaborate on them at present. He also claimed that he had played a significant role in the BJP's campaign and in Rajeev Chandrasekhar's electoral success.
Devan entered politics by forming the Kerala People's Party in 2004, later renamed the Nava Kerala People's Party. The party merged with the BJP in 2021 following his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Devan was subsequently appointed a vice-president of the Kerala BJP.
His sudden resignation marks a significant political development involving a prominent figure from Kerala's film industry and is likely to trigger discussions within the state BJP over the reasons behind his decision.
