Wonder(ful) women of Indian cricket
As any Indian is, the World Malayalee Voice stands in awe with due reverence to the women’s cricket team for its historic victory and great accomplishment in the World Cup final played against South Africa on Sunday.
It was an epoch-making day for India, as this was the first time that the Indian women’s cricket team ever locked lips with the cup and basked in the moment of glory.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the champions and said that this stellar win by the Indian women's cricket team will pave the way for “future champions” to take up sports.
“A spectacular win by the Indian team in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Finals. Their performance in the final was marked by great skill and confidence. The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports,” he wrote in a post on X.
Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya shared a clip of the moment when the Indian team clinched the victory and said, “history scripted”. “What an iconic performance by our Women in Blue. 140 crore Indians are cherishing this proud moment. Congratulations, World Champions!” he wrote.
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said that the team did not just lift the trophy but also lifted the nation's spirits. “What a moment of pride! Our Women in Blue have made history and touched a billion hearts. Your courage, grit and grace have brought glory to India and inspired countless young girls to dream fearlessly. You didn’t just lift a trophy, you lifted a nation’s spirit. Jai Hind!” he wrote on X.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, congratulating the team, called it a “moment of immense pride for the entire nation”. He lauded the team’s fighting spirit and said their achievement would inspire generations of young women to chase their dreams fearlessly.
“The fighting spirit displayed by the Indian team throughout the tournament deserves special mention. This victory is not only a proud moment for Indian cricket and the sporting fraternity but also for the entire nation. In a male-dominated society where only men’s achievements are often celebrated, this World Cup triumph will serve as a powerful source of inspiration and energy for every girl in the country,” the CM said.
Under the dynamic leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, the team showcased incredible resilience, grit and skill to clinch the title. Their journey was a testament to years of hard work and dedication, overcoming tough opponents like Australia in the semi-finals and South Africa in the final with stellar performances from players like Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma.
This victory is more than just a trophy; it is a powerful statement of "Nari Shakti" (women's power) and a profound inspiration for countless young girls across the country to pursue their dreams in sports.
