Reactor blast at chemical factory leaves 10 dead, dozen injured in Telangana

A REACTOR blast at a chemical factory in Telangana's Sangareddy killed 10 and injured over dozens, according to officials. Eleven fire tenders have reached the spot to douse the blaze while engaging in firefighting operations. The incident happened at Sigachi Pharma Company, Pasamailaram Phase 1, Medak.

Injured taken to hospital

"The incident took place at Sigachi Pharma Company, Pasamailaram Phase 1. Eleven fire tenders have reached the site. Nearly 15-20 people have been injured. Further details are awaited," ANI quoted Telangana fire officials as saying.

The administration has not recovered any bodies so far, ANI reported. A police official said 14 injured have been taken to the hospital, PTI reported, adding they were rescued but their condition was not known at that point of time.

The Superintendent of Police of Sangareddy, Paritosh Pankaj, stated, “Till now we haven't recovered any bodies, rescue operation is going on. We will update in some time.”

The video shows thick smoke emanating from the factory and a rescue operation underway, with firefighting on-site trying to stop the flames. The blast hurled workers up to 100 meters away, trapping many in surrounding tents as fires persisted.

The reports said the blast was so strong that it broke the factory's structure and impacted the site heavily. Several ambulances, comprising 108 personnel, were at the spot, an IANS report stated.

Migrant workers from Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and other states used to work at the industrial unit. The explosion and subsequent fire triggered panic among employees in both the chemical unit and nearby factories, prompting them to flee the premises, reports stated.

Reports specified that the rescue teams deployed earthmovers to clear the debris of the collapsed structure amid concerns that some workers might be trapped underneath.

Sangareddy District Collector P. Pravinya and Superintendent of Police Paritosh Pankaj also arrived at the spot to oversee the rescue and relief operations.
