THE Keralam government has sanctioned a compensation of Rs 12.5 lakh to KK Surendran for the police torture he suffered during the 2003 Muthanga agitation. The government order followed a favourable court order earlier this year, after Surendran’s 22-year legal battle.

The Muthanga agitation was a land occupation struggle led by the Adivasi Gothra Maha Sabha at the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary in Wayanad in February 2003.

Keralam Chief Minister VD Satheesan announced the decision on X, stating, "KK Surendran no longer needs to wander in search of justice; court-ordered compensation to be paid.

"The CM said the government also decided to recover the compensation amount from the personal assets of the responsible police personnel convicted of assaulting Surendran.

Surendran is a Dalit man and a retired faculty member at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET).

During the Muthanga struggle, Surendran was arrested by the police for allegedly supporting the protesters and was labelled a left-wing extremist. Later, a CBI inquiry led to his release from jail. However, the physical injuries and trauma he suffered due to custodial torture at the Sulthan Bathery police station prompted him to file a petition in court seeking compensation.

Speaking with TNM earlier, Surendran alleged that his support for the Adivasi struggle had made him a target for the police, adding that the arrest and the fabricated case were pre-planned.

He also alleged that he was denied food and water and that his arrest was not communicated to his family. He was not produced before a magistrate within 24 hours, as mandated by law.

Although he received a favourable court order in 2021, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government appealed against it. After about five years, he obtained another favourable judgement on March 16 this year.
