Minu Muneer arrested in Balachandra Menon’s defamation complaint, left on bail
Ernakulam cyber crime police on Monday, June 30, arrested Malayalam actor Minu Muneer in connection with a defamation complaint lodged by actor-director Balachandra Menon. Minu had accused Balachandra Menon of sexual misconduct in 2024, following the release of the Hema Committee Report. After recording an arrest, she was released on the same day, on account of an anticipatory bail from the Kerala High Court.In 2024, following the release of the Hema Committee report, which revealed rampant sexual harassment and power abuse in the Malayalam film industry, Minu made allegations of sexual misconduct against a few men in the industry, including Balachandra Menon. He denied the allegations and filed a complaint against Minu and another woman, claiming they threatened him. His complaint also said that Minu repeatedly gave interviews to discredit him in society, posted his photos on social media, and encouraged others to post derogatory comments. The cyber police registered a First Information report against Minu on October 2, 2024, under Sections 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), 67 and 67(a) (publication or transmission of obscene and sexually explicit material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act and 120(O) (violating public order) of the Kerala Police Act. Minu had also alleged sexual harassment against actor and CPI(M) MLA Mukesh and six others, including actors Jayasurya, Edavela Babu, and Maniyanpilla Raju, production controllers Noble and Vichu, as well as producer and Lawyers’ Congress president VS Chandrasekharan, through a Facebook post.
