Actor Devan poised to head TVK’s Kerala unit; Vijay meeting on Sept 10
ACTOR Devan, following his departure from the BJP, is set to join Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s Tamilaka Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). Reports say that preliminary discussions regarding his entry into the TVK have already concluded.
Devan is scheduled to travel to Chennai to hold a formal meeting with TVK chief Vijay on September 10. A final announcement regarding his party entry will be made after that. Reports also suggest Devan may become the state president of the party’s Kerala unit.
A special delegation of TVK leadership from Tamil Nadu recently conducted a three-hour closed-door meeting with Devan at his residence in Chalakudy, Kerala. The political alliance was reportedly facilitated by actress Priyanka. The high-profile political shift comes immediately after Devan resigned from the BJP and his post as the Kerala BJP vice-president.
Devan announced his resignation from the BJP at a function held at the Kanichukulangara temple. He said he wanted politics that embodied the ideals and concepts of Sree Narayana Guru, which he had not seen in the state BJP for the last five years. Union Minister Suresh Gopi tried unsuccessfully to keep Devan in the party.
Speaking to a Malayalam news channel, Devan said he resigned from the BJP not to join TVK. TVK approached him after he resigned from the BJP.
Devan formed the Nava Kerala People’s Party in 2004. This party merged with the BJP in March 2021.
While TVK has historically limited its footprint to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the party is executing a broader strategy to establish active state units across South India, with Kerala serving as a primary target. Devan expressed confidence in this vision, noting that many young Keralites are actively looking for a fresh regional political alternative.
