Mammootty turns 75: A milestone birthday for Malayalam cinema’s megastar

MALAYALAM cinema icon turned 75 on Monday, September 7, with fans, colleagues and well-wishers across the world celebrating the legendary actor’s remarkable journey spanning more than five decades.

Born Muhammad Kutty Ismail Panaparambil, Mammootty has grown from a young actor making his early appearances in Malayalam cinema into one of Indian cinema’s most respected and versatile performers.

His career has encompassed hundreds of roles across Malayalam and other Indian languages, earning him a reputation for his extraordinary range and screen presence.

The landmark birthday has triggered an outpouring of greetings from fans and members of the film industry.

Superstar Mohanlal, Mammootty’s longtime colleague and friend, paid a warm tribute, recalling their association in more than 50 films and praising his enduring passion for cinema.

The celebrations also brought a special treat for fans. At midnight on his birthday, the title and first-look poster of Mela, Mammootty’s upcoming film directed by Nithish Sahadev, were unveiled. The film is the ninth production venture of Mammootty’s production company.

Mammootty continues to maintain an impressive line-up even at 75. His recent release - Patriot - hit theatres in May, while upcoming projects include Mattancherry Mafia, Padayaatra—his reunion with veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan—and the Tamil film OM: Chapter One, in which he shares the screen with Dhanush.

Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan described Mammootty as a pride of Malayalam cinema, highlighting the actor’s five-decade-long contribution and his influence on Indian cinema.

For generations of Malayalis, Mammootty is more than a superstar. His memorable characters, powerful performances and willingness to experiment with challenging roles have made him an enduring cultural icon.

As the megastar enters his 76th year, the celebration is not merely about age—it is a celebration of an extraordinary cinematic journey and an actor who continues to reinvent himself.

Happy 75th Birthday, Mammukka!
