Veteran Congress leader and former minister C V Padmarajan passes away

VETERAN Congress leader and former Electricity Minister C V Padmarajan passed away at the age of 93.

He died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kollam due to age-related ailments.

Padmarajan served as the Minister for Social Welfare and Fisheries in the K Karunakaran-led Cabinet. When Karunakaran briefly stepped down as Chief Minister in 1992 due to an accident, Padmarajan served as the leader of the House for a short period.

From 1991 to 1995, in the A K Antony Cabinet, he held portfolios including Electricity and Coir, and for a brief period, the Finance Department as well. 

 He later served as vice chairman of the State Planning Board and also held the post of Government Pleader for Kollam district.

Padmarajan was born at Paravur in the erstwhile Kingdom of Travancore on 22 July 1931 as the son of K. Velu Vaidyar and K. M. Thankamma.

He started his political life through the All Travancore Students' Congress during the freedom struggle. He started his professional career as a teacher and later he graduated with a degree in Law. 

He was appointed District Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor in Quilon during 1973–79. He married R. Vasantha Kumari and has 2 sons.
