Sunita’s grit makes Indians proud

SUNITA Williams and Butch Wilmore returned to planet Earth on Tuesday, March 18, ending an unplanned protracted stay on the International Space Station.
The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft carrying them and two other astronauts — Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov — splashed down into the waters off the coast of Florida state just minutes before 6 pm, as NASA had announced. The capsule was then carried to the recovery ship, where Hague became the first to exit the spacecraft nearly 50 minutes after splashdown. Williams emerged third.
Sunita Williams has inspired millions of Indians and people around the world. From her ground-breaking space missions to her deep connection with Indian culture, Williams embodies resilience and determination. She had taken samosas and the Bhagavad Gita to space, celebrated Diwali in orbit and encouraged countless young minds to pursue their dreams in science and exploration.
Her incredible achievements are a motivation to future generations.
Ahead of her return to Earth, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concern and admiration for Sunita Williams, one of India’s most distinguished daughters.
In a letter dated March 1, 2025, Modi conveyed his good wishes for Sunita’s safe return and reiterated the pride of 1.4 billion Indians in her extraordinary achievements.
The letter, delivered through astronaut Mike Massimino, reflects the deep connection and pride felt by the people of India for Sunita Williams, who has inspired millions with her achievements in space exploration.

Expressing his deep admiration for her perseverance and strength, the Prime Minister continued, “1.4 billion Indians have always taken great pride in your achievements. Recent developments have yet again showcased your inspirational fortitude and determination.”
