Nagaland Governor La Ganesan to be cremated in Chennai with full state honours

His body, kept at his T. Nagar residence for the public to pay their respects, will be laid to rest in the afternoon. The 80-year-old leader breathed his last at 6.23 pm on Friday while undergoing treatment for a severe head injury sustained in a fall at his residence on August 8. Despite surgery and intensive care at Apollo Hospitals, he succumbed to his injuries.The Nagaland government has declared a seven-day state mourning from August 16 to 22 as a mark of respect. Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen, in a notification, said that during this period, the National Flag would be flown at half-mast on all government buildings where it is regularly hoisted.Condolences poured in from national and state leaders. President Droupadi Murmu said, “Shri La Ganesan worked for the welfare of the people, and his contribution to Tamil Nadu and the country will be remembered.”Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on social media, “Pained by the passing of Nagaland Governor Thiru La. Ganesan Ji. He will be remembered as a devout nationalist, who dedicated his life to service and nation-building. He worked hard to expand the BJP across Tamil Nadu. He was deeply passionate about Tamil culture too. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi recalled his long years of dedicated service, “He rendered lifelong selfless service with humility and dedication. His passing is a great loss to public life.” Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, who paid homage in person, described him as “a leader known for his simplicity, calm nature, and ability to build friendships across political lines.”Other political figures also paid tribute. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami remembered him as “an affable leader,” while senior BJP leader and former Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan said his death on Independence Day was “poignant,” reflecting his lifelong patriotism and contribution to Tamil literature. BJP state president Nainar Nagendran and former state chief K Annamalai also expressed sorrow, with Annamalai calling him “a simple and profound thinker.”VK Sasikala, close aide of the late Jayalalithaa, highlighted his cordial ties with the AIADMK, and AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran called him “a dignified leader,” extending condolences to his family.Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio remembered Ganesan’s role in the state, “Despite holding the highest office in the state, he remained simple, humble, and deeply connected to the grassroots. His modest nature endeared him to the people and will continue to inspire generations. His life was a testament to selfless service, calm leadership, and an enduring devotion to the ideals of justice and unity.”Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen KT Parnaik (Retd.) said in a condolence message: “Late Ganesan was a venerable statesman and an exemplary leader, and a devoted social activist, who worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people and upheld the highest values of integrity and humility in public life.”Born in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, Ganesan began his political journey in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He rose to become Tamil Nadu BJP president and was later nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh. He was appointed Governor of Manipur in August 2021, briefly held additional charge of West Bengal in 2022, and became the 19th Governor of Nagaland in February 2023, a post he held until his demise.
