Three migrant workers killed in building collapse in Thrissur

The structure gave way around 6 am, just as most of the occupants were preparing to leave for work. The building, located near the Kodakara panchayat office, was home to 17 labourers. Fourteen of them managed to escape unhurt. The remaining three were trapped under the debris. Rescue teams retrieved them shortly after, but all three succumbed to their injuries. The deceased have been identified as Rahul (19), Rupel (21), and Aleem (30). Rahul was pulled out alive and taken to a hospital but later died. Rupel and Aleem were found dead under the rubble. Officials suspect the decades-old structure may have collapsed due to the heavy rainfall that lashed the area the previous night. Thrissur District Collector Arjun Pandian, speaking to reporters at the site, said, “Three workers from West Bengal have lost their lives. The collapse occurred around 6 in the morning. Despite regular instructions, many migrant workers continue to live in unsafe conditions. Contractors often house them in buildings like this because of lower rent.” He added that all 17 men were employed by a contractor who had arranged their accommodation. “This building was in poor shape. We’ve directed the labour department and police to inspect such sites and take strict action. Even though checks are carried out regularly, incidents like this still happen,” Arjun said. Local residents, along with police and fire and rescue personnel, launched the search operation soon after the collapse. A JCB was later brought in to help clear the debris, allowing rescuers to locate the victims more quickly.
