Iran calls US strikes a violation of international law, warns of ‘everlasting consequences’

IRAN'S Atomic Energy Organisation and Foreign Ministry have condemned the United States for launching military strikes on its nuclear facilities, calling the attacks a grave violation of international law, the UN Charter, and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The strikes, reportedly carried out in coordination with Israel, targeted the Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear sites early on June 22.

US President Donald Trump had earlier announced the strikes, calling them a necessary step to cripple Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity.

“We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. All planes are now outside of Iran air space. A full payload of bombs was dropped on the primary site, Fordow. All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to our great American Warriors,” Trump stated on the social platform Truth Social.

Trump also declared the attack a historic moment for the US, Israel, and the world, urging Iran to end hostilities.

“This cannot continue. There will either be peace or tragedy for Iran, far greater than what we have witnessed over the last eight days. Remember, there are many targets left,” he warned.

Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation, while not disclosing the extent of damage, emphasized that the attacks would not deter its nuclear program.

“The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran assures the great Iranian nation that despite the evil conspiracies of its enemies, with the efforts of thousands of its revolutionary and motivated scientists and experts, it will not allow the development of this national industry, which is the result of the blood of nuclear martyrs, to be stopped,” it said in a statement.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi issued a scathing condemnation of the strikes, describing them as “a grave violation of the UN Charter, international law, and the NPT.”

In a post on X, Araghchi wrote, “The United States, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has committed a grave violation... Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless, and criminal behaviour.”

He further warned of serious repercussions: “In accordance with the UN Charter and its provisions allowing a legitimate response in self-defence, Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interest, and people.”

Trump, in a subsequent media briefing, applauded the military operation.

“I want to congratulate the great American patriots who flew those magnificent machines tonight and all of the United States military on an operation the likes of which the world has not seen in many, many decades. Hopefully we no longer need their services in this capacity. I hope so.”

He also extended gratitude to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu: “We worked as a team, like perhaps no team has ever worked before, and we've gone a long way to erasing this horrible threat to Israel.”

The recent escalation follows Israel’s surprise strike on Iran on June 13, which killed several Iranian military commanders and nuclear scientists. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israeli targets.

The ongoing conflict has heightened tensions across the Middle East, already inflamed by Israel’s extended war in Gaza since October 2023. With the US now directly involved militarily, fears of a broader regional conflict are growing.

Iranian state media confirmed parts of the Fordow nuclear facility were hit but provided limited information on the extent of the damage.

Earlier on Friday, Trump gave Iran two weeks to return to the negotiating table over its nuclear program, indicating that time for diplomacy was rapidly running out.
