The Save Nimisha Priya Action Council told TNM that the Director General of Prosecution in Yemen has informed the jailer at the prison Nimisha is lodged in, to conduct the execution. The decision came after the Action Council’s efforts at communicating with the victim's family and fixing the blood money amount failed. According to the council, they offered to pay USD 1 million, that is, approximately Rs 8.5 crore. However, the progress in the negotiation was delayed because the family has not yet communicated the amount they expect to be paid. Members of the Action Council informed TNM that they will try to contact the family within the next two days in another attempt to negotiate and finalise the blood money amount. Nimisha was convicted for murdering Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mahdi in August 2017. A Yemen court sentenced her to death in 2020. On December 30, 2024, Yemeni president Rashad Al-Alimi approved Nimisha’s death sentence. The only way to save Nimisha is to pay the blood money to the family of Talal Abdo Mahdi. Under the Sharia law in Yemen, the family of the victim holds the power to pardon the sentence of a prisoner. It was in 2008 that Nimisha travelled to Yemen along with her husband and daughter. In 2014, both her husband and daughter returned to India due to a financial crisis. In 2015, she started a clinic there with the help of Talal Abdo Mahdi, because a Yemen citizen’s assistance is mandatory to operate a business in the country. Soon, he allegedly began subjecting her to physical torture and extortion after confiscating her passport. In 2017, she allegedly injected Talal Abdo Mahdi with a sedative, following which he collapsed and died. In a similar case, Kozhikode-native Abdul Rahim, who was jailed in Saudi Arabia since 2006 after being convicted of killing a Saudi boy, was saved after the family agreed to accept 1.5 million Saudi riyals – approximately Rs 34 crore – as blood money.
