Parel Palli is now basilica

THE Vatican officially elevated St. Mary's Syro-Malabar Church (Parel Palli) in Changanassery, Kerala, to the status of a Minor Basilica.

This historic announcement comes just weeks ahead of the highly anticipated consecration ceremony of the newly constructed mega-structure scheduled for November 21, 2026.

Spanning over 51,000 square feet, the newly built church is recognized as the largest in Kerala and is widely cited as the second-largest church building in Asia.

The multi-storey structure seamlessly integrates traditional Gothic elements with modern design.

It features a three-storey layout including a dedicated underground chapel for silent meditation, a primary worship floor, and an adoration chapel.

Originally established as a small shrine in 1904, Parel Palli grew into a prominent Marian pilgrimage hub.

The Pope directly blessed the foundation stone of this new landmark project.

The preparations for the November 21 consecration have recently drawn intense local attention.

A major controversy erupted among sections of the church community following the leadership's decision to invite Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, the State President of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), as the chief guest for the cultural conference of the event.
