Less than one-third of Gaza's hospitals are able to function - WHO

BBC update:

Israel has continued its bombardment of Gaza, with the main focus on Khan Younis in the south. There's also been fighting in Rafah near the Egyptian border.

Meanwhile, a WHO official says the health system in Gaza has gone from 36 hospitals to only 11 in just 66 days - and those are only partially functioning.

The US says Israel must put "a premium on civilian life" and give clearer instructions to allow people to avoid the conflict, adding Hamas must also protect civilians.

In Jenin in the occupied West Bank, at least four people have been killed - witnesses say they were hit by a drone strike.

Elsewhere, Iran-backed Houthis have claimed responsibility for an attack on a Norwegian tanker off the coast of Yemen.

Hamas broke through Israel's heavily guarded perimeter on 7 October, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages - some of whom were released during a brief truce.

Israel has launched air strikes and ground offensives in the territory. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says Israel has killed more than 18,200 people.

Gaza civilians enduring 'hell on earth' says UN official

THE head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Philippe Lazzarini, has said civilians in the Gaza Strip are enduring "hell on earth", after visiting the enclave.

The UN says aid distribution in much of the territory has largely stopped due to the intensity of fighting and restrictions on movement along main roads.

Posting on X, Lazzarini says: "Back in Gaza, endless deepening tragedy.

"People are everywhere, live in the street, need everything.

"They plead for safety and an end to this hell on earth."

He says his agency is facing "an impossible situation".

On Saturday, a senior UN aid official warned that half of Gaza's population was starving and only a fraction of the supplies needed have been able to enter the Strip.
