John Brittas assaulted by CRPF and Delhi police at SIR protest
MP John Brittas was allegedly assaulted and injured by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Delhi Police personnel in New Delhi on Sunday, October 11. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] Rajya Sabha MP from Keralam was manhandled during the ongoing protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over discrepancies in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.According to reports, the incident occurred at Connaught Place while John Brittas was speaking to the media. He stated that security personnel pinned him down and manhandled him inside a vehicle despite him identifying himself as an MP.An out-of-breath and visibly distressed Brittas told the media, "I was shoved onto a seat and pinned down by four CRPF personnel. When it came to a point where I couldn't breathe, a DCP came to know of it and phoned me. DCP Sachin Rawat called my phone and asked for it to be given to those around me. He then told them to let me go right away, or each of them would be suspended. That is when they let me off here."The DCP saw the assault through the camera attached to one of the men, Brittas clarified. "They beat him also," Brittas said, pointing to a man sitting next to him. “It was only this man who was there to help me, I do not even know his name,” Brittas said, before turning to the man and asking for his name. "Sajid Hussein," he replied. "It was because of him that I was able to get off. He took the phone when the DCP called," Brittas added. "I repeatedly told them that I am an MP and showed them my ID card. This is my situation despite being an MP. I am not able to talk more," Brittas said, seated on the pavement, breathing heavily.John Brittas was later admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, according to reports. Jaick, leaning against the metal railings of a detention cell within a Delhi Police bus, said his clothes had been ripped off by the police.“Young police officers stood in line on either side and assaulted each protester before shoving them into these cells (inside detention buses). People were slapped in the face, hit on the back with elbows, and kicked with boots. There were attempts to rip off our clothes, including those of women protesters. The Delhi Police assault was terrifying,” he said in a video.
