Ahead of Sunita William’s ‘homecoming’, Modi pens letter to India’s illustrious daughter

AS the world eagerly awaits the return of NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore from the International Space Station (ISS), Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his concern and admiration for Sunita Williams, one of India’s most distinguished daughters.
In a heartfelt letter dated March 1, 2025, Modi conveyed his well wishes for Sunita’s safe return and reiterated the pride of 1.4 billion Indians in her extraordinary achievements.
The letter, delivered through astronaut Mike Massimino, reflects the deep connection and pride felt by the people of India for Sunita Williams, who has inspired millions with her achievements in space exploration. Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Jitendra Singh, shared the details of the letter on social media, highlighting the Prime Minister’s personal gesture of affection and support.
Astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who were stuck at the International Space Station (ISS) for more than nine months, began their return journey on Tuesday. According to NASA, Williams and Wilmore undocked from the ISS at 10:35am IST and set on a 17-hour trip back to Earth.
The spacecraft, Elon Musk-led SpaceX’s Dragon, will splash down off the coast of the American state of Florida around 3:27am IST Wednesday.
Conversations recalled
Modi’s letter to Sunita Williams reads, “Even though you are thousands of miles away, you continue to remain close to our hearts. The people of India are praying for your good health and success in your mission.”
He further recalled his conversations with US Presidents during his visits to the United States, where he inquired about her well-being, emphasizing the pride India has always felt in her accomplishments.
The Prime Minister also fondly remembered his meeting with Sunita Williams during his 2016 visit to the US and expressed his hope that Sunita would visit India upon her return.
“After your return, we are looking forward to seeing you in India. It will be a pleasure for India to host one of its most illustrious daughters,” PM Modi wrote.
Expressing his deep admiration for her perseverance and strength, the Prime Minister continued, “1.4 billion Indians have always taken great pride in your achievements. Recent developments have yet again showcased your inspirational fortitude and determination.”
In his message, PM Modi also acknowledged Sunita’s mother, Bonnie Pandya, who, he said, must be eagerly awaiting her daughter’s return. He recalled his meeting with Sunita’s late father, Deepakbhai, during his visit to the US, and offered his blessings to her family.
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are scheduled to return to Earth after a remarkable nine-month stay on the ISS. Their journey back comes after a series of unexpected delays, including technical issues with the spacecraft.
The astronauts will return aboard the SpaceX Crew-9 capsule, following the unplanned extension of their mission. The homecoming of Sunita Williams, one of the most accomplished astronauts in the world, has been a topic of great anticipation in India, where she is hailed as a national hero.
Modi’s heartfelt letter not only conveys the country’s admiration for Sunita Williams but also strengthens the bond between India and the global scientific community. It highlights the collective pride of the nation in her achievements and the warm anticipation of her return.
Dr. Jitendra Singh, who shared the Prime Minister’s letter, also informed that Modi met with former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino a few days ago and entrusted him with the message, ensuring that Sunita would receive the letter and the love of her fellow countrymen.
As Sunita Williams and her fellow astronauts prepare to return home, their remarkable journey continues to inspire millions, and India eagerly awaits the return of its illustrious daughter.
