Temperatures drop in several states, NYC activates ‘Code Blue’; snowfall may affect travel

A POWERFUL Arctic blast is currently causing a significant temperature drop across several US states, prompting New York City to activate its 'Code Blue' alert. The cold air is also bringing snow and gusty winds, which are expected to cause travel delays and hazardous conditions.

Key Details

NYC 'Code Blue' Activated: New York City's Department of Homeless Services has issued a "Code Blue" alert to provide emergency shelter and assistance to homeless individuals due to temperatures dropping near freezing. During a Code Blue, no one is denied shelter.

Widespread Temperature Drops: An Arctic blast is bringing frigid temperatures to most of the US, with many areas in the Midwest, South, and East expected to see morning lows in the 20s and 30s. Some regions may experience record cold temperatures for Veterans Day.

Snowfall and Winter Weather Alerts

Great Lakes Area: Significant snowfall is expected in the Great Lakes region.

Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin: These states are under winter weather advisories, with meteorologists warning of hazardous travel conditions and low visibility.

Upper Midwest (Iowa, South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota): Snow has already begun falling in these areas, with accumulations of 1 to 3 inches generally expected, and heavier snowfall likely in areas between Sioux City and Sioux Falls.

New Jersey: Wind gusts up to 40 mph are forecast after freezing overnight temperatures, with an arctic blast plunging wind chills into the teens.

Travel Impacts: Delays at airports are anticipated due to the severe weather. The combination of snow, ice, and wind is creating slippery roads and low visibility, making travel difficult in affected regions.

Safety Precautions: Officials urge residents to stay informed, be prepared for travel disruptions, check on vulnerable neighbours and seniors, and take precautions against the cold, such as ensuring homes are adequately heated (at least 68°F during the day).

Residents in affected areas are advised to sign up for local weather alerts, such as NYC's Notify NYC, to stay updated on conditions.
