Kozhikode man dies after falling into open drain, residents demand safety measures
A 60-year-old man died after accidentally falling into an overflowing drain beneath a bus stop in Kerala’s Kozhikode on Sunday, March 16. The deceased, identified as Kalathilpoyil Sasi, a native of Kovoor, was found nearly 300 meters from the accident site the next morning.Sasi and his friends had taken shelter at a bus stop due to heavy rain when the incident occurred around 8:30 PM. According to locals, he lost balance and fell into the open drain. Bystanders immediately launched a search and alerted the police and Fire and Rescue personnel.Rescue teams attempted a search operation at night but had to halt due to poor weather. The operation was set to resume at 7 AM on Monday, March 17, but a resident discovered Sasi’s body before the search could begin.“We were on our way to restart the search when a local resident spotted the body and informed us,” a Fire and Rescue officer told the media.Sasi’s body has been shifted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for postmortem examination. Meanwhile, residents have raised concerns over the lack of safety measures in the area, alleging that similar accidents have happened before. They are demanding a protective slab and a handrail to prevent further mishaps.
