How a principal’s letter led to a major drug bust in Kochi college
A letter from the principal of Government Polytechnic College, Kalamassery, played a crucial role in the seizure of ganja from the college’s boys’ hostel, leading to multiple arrests. On March 12, the principal had alerted the police, seeking surveillance on campus ahead of Holi celebrations. In his letter, he warned of drug dealing, rampant use of alcohol and ganja, and the possibility of students selling drugs to each other. Following the bust, the police arrested two more former students on Saturday, March 15, based on the statement of Akash, who was caught with 1.9 kg of ganja. The arrested students, Ashiq and his friend Sharik, are suspected of supplying ganja to the hostel. Their involvement was confirmed through statements given by students arrested earlier. “The two students arrested today were supplying ganja to the hostel on demand, but further investigation is needed to determine if more people are involved,” said PV Baby, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Thrikkakara. “We have also found that they had supplied smaller quantities of ganja on previous occasions,” he added. Meanwhile, the rest of the hostel residents remain under police watch, as evidence suggests they pooled money to procure ganja for Holi celebrations. Authorities are also planning to inspect the bank accounts of students linked to the case to track any financial transactions related to drug procurement.
