ON October 27, 2025, a cyclonic storm named Montha formed over the Bay of Bengal, triggering heavy rain and dark clouds over Andhra Pradesh as it strengthened.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several coastal districts, predicting severe impact from wind and rainfall.
Cyclone Montha is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada, between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam.
The storm is projected to make landfall during the evening or night of Tuesday, October 28.
By the time of landfall, the storm is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast across coastal Andhra Pradesh until October 29. Isolated pockets could see extremely heavy rainfall.
Neighbouring states, including Odisha, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and parts of West Bengal, are also expected to experience significant rainfall.
The approaching severe cyclonic storm is bringing strong winds, and wind speeds are expected to peak during landfall.
A storm surge of about 1 metre above the astronomical tide is likely, potentially causing inundation in low-lying coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.
Red and orange alerts have been issued for numerous districts across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has placed the state's administrative machinery on high alert.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams have been deployed to vulnerable areas in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
Authorities in coastal areas have begun evacuating residents, particularly those in low-lying areas. In the NTR district, social welfare hostels were closed, and pregnant women were moved to hospitals.
School closures: Holidays have been declared for educational institutions in many affected districts.
Fishing vessels have been recalled to shore, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea in the affected regions.
Residents are urged to stay indoors, secure loose objects, and follow official advisories. Beaches and boating activities in districts like Eluru and Krishna have been suspended.
