Trump calls high-stakes talks with Xi ‘great’ as China throws spectacular welcome
PRESIDENT Donald Trump described talks with Xi Jinping as "great" after a nearly two-hour-long high-stakes meeting in Beijing.
But he didn’t say if they talked about Taiwan. The self-governed island claimed by Beijing is a major source of tension, alongside tariffs, competition over tech and the Iran war.
Soon after talks began, Chinese state media released comments by Xi that warned of potential “conflict” with the US over Taiwan.
Trump was given a grand welcome at the Great Hall of the People, where Xi called for the two sides to be “partners, not rivals” and Trump described Xi as a “great leader.”
Trump is joined in Beijing by tech bosses, including Tesla’s Elon Musk and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang.
