Thrissur Pooram to be held without fireworks display
BASED on reports from April 23, 2026, Thrissur Pooram 2026 will be held without the traditional, grand fireworks display following a devastating firecracker storage explosion at Mundathikode that claimed 14 lives.
No Main Fireworks: The spectacular early morning fireworks (Vedikettu) and sample fireworks are cancelled.
Symbolic Rituals: Only minimal traditional fireworks (Kathina) will be allowed.
Kudamattam Reduced: The iconic Kudamattam (umbrella exchange) ceremony will be significantly scaled down to only 15 minutes.
Fewer Umbrellas: Instead of over 50 umbrellas, only about ten sets will be displayed.
Traditional Elements Continue: The Ilanjithara Melam and the lineup of 15 elephants for both participating temples (Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu) will continue as scheduled, but in a solemn, less festive manner.
The decision reflects a sombre mood to honour the tragedy's victims, focusing entirely on traditional rituals rather than public celebration.
