Muslim woman who gifted painting to Modi booked for filming video at Guruvayur temple
Jasna Salim, a Muslim woman who rose to fame after gifting Prime Minister Narendra Modi a painting of Lord Krishna, has been booked by the Guruvayur police for allegedly violating a High Court order at the Guruvayur Sree Krishna temple.According to the police, Jasna filmed a video inside the temple premises during the annual festival last month, and later circulated it on social media platforms. The video reportedly shows Jasna placing a paper garland on a Krishna idol located above the temple treasury near the eastern entrance. The act, which was not part of any sanctioned religious event, is said to have violated a Kerala High Court directive that prohibits videography within the temple premises, except during religious ceremonies and weddings.Acting on a complaint from the Guruvayur Devaswom, the police booked Jasna under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 192 (provocation with intent to cause a riot). This is not the first time Jasna has found herself at the centre of controversy in Guruvayur. In an earlier incident, she had filmed herself cutting a birthday cake near the temple premises, which also drew sharp criticism from right-wing groups who accused her of hurting religious sentiments. The incident led the Devaswom authorities to approach the High Court, which then issued a ban on filming inside the temple.Following the backlash, Jasna had said she was subjected to severe cyberbullying and online harassment.A native of Koyilandy in Kozhikode district, Jasna had told the media that she has created over 500 paintings of Lord Krishna and has been offering them at Guruvayur for several years. She gained national attention in January 2024 after presenting one such painting to Prime Minister Modi, who later tweeted about the gift.
