West Bengal records over 90% voter turnout in first phase of state assembly elections

THE first phase of the state assembly elections has concluded, setting new records in voter turnout.
The Election Commission reported that turnout touched more than 90% till 6 p.m., a figure unprecedented in the state’s recent electoral history.

In this first phase, around 36 million voters exercised their franchise across 152 constituencies in 16 districts of West Bengal. Women voters actively participated in both rural and urban areas. The presence of many first-time voters was also notable. From villages to cities, voter enthusiasm was evident.

Despite the largely peaceful atmosphere, reports of stray incidents came from areas including Murshidabad, Asansol, and Birbhum, where clashes and vandalism were alleged. Complaints of intimidation and EVM glitches also surfaced.

Security was a major challenge. To ensure smooth polling, central forces were deployed, webcasting was arranged at every booth, and flying squads kept watch. The Commission claims these measures helped in conducting voting without disruption.

Politically, this phase was crucial. For the Trinamool Congress, BJP, Congress, and the Left, it was the first big test of strength. Observers believe the trends from this round will shape campaign strategies in the coming phases.
